For many businesses and households, Christmas brings a welcome pause. Offices close, staff take leave, routines slow down — and quite often, technology is left quietly ticking over in the background.
As January approaches and everything powers back up, it’s worth taking a few sensible steps to make sure your internet and phone systems are ready for a smooth restart. A short check now can prevent unnecessary stress in the first working days of the New Year.
1. Check Your Internet Connection First
Before emails start flying and systems log back in, confirm your broadband is behaving as expected:
- Has the router been rebooted recently?
- Are speeds and Wi-Fi coverage as they should be?
- Has anything been unplugged or moved during cleaning or decorating?
A quick restart of the router often clears minor issues before they turn into bigger problems.
2. Make Sure Phones Are Set Up Correctly
Phone systems often get adjusted over Christmas:
- Holiday messages may still be active
- Call forwarding or diversion might still be switched on
- Ring groups may not be back to normal
Test inbound and outbound calls early, before customers start ringing in earnest.
3. Confirm Remote Access Is Still Working
With more people working from home in January, it’s worth checking:
- VPN or remote desktop access
- Softphone or mobile apps
- User passwords that may have expired over the break
It’s far easier to fix these issues on a quiet morning than during a busy first day back.
4. Look for Temporary Fixes That Became Permanent
December is often the month of “just do this for now”. That might include:
- Plugged-in Wi-Fi extenders
- Temporary call routes
- Workarounds for slow connections
January is the right time to tidy these up and decide whether a proper solution is needed.
5. Know Who to Call If Something Isn’t Right
Perhaps the most important check of all is knowing who you can speak to if there’s a problem. Long queues and call centres are nobody’s idea of a good start to the year.
Having a familiar, local contact who understands your setup makes all the difference.
A Sensible Start to the New Year
Good connectivity isn’t about chasing the newest gadget or the cheapest deal. It’s about reliability, support, and knowing things will simply work when you need them to.
