Working closely with local businesses gives you a clear view of what’s really happening on the ground — not just what suppliers are marketing. Over the past week or so, a few familiar connectivity themes keep cropping up in conversations.
One of the biggest is speed versus reliability. Many businesses now have fast FTTP on paper, but are discovering that raw speed alone doesn’t guarantee a smooth working day. Issues tend to surface around Wi-Fi coverage, ageing routers, or a lack of resilience rather than the broadband line itself.
Another common theme is single points of failure. A surprising number of businesses are still relying on one internet connection for everything — phones, card machines, cloud systems, and remote access. When that line goes down, the whole operation stops. More people are now asking about simple backup options, often after experiencing a preventable outage.
We’re also seeing increased frustration with overcomplicated services. Whether it’s broadband packages bloated with features that aren’t needed, or phone systems packed with options no one uses, businesses are starting to question whether they’re paying for the right things rather than the most things.
There’s also a noticeable shift back towards local, accountable support. Businesses are tired of call centres, ticket queues, and repeating themselves. They want to know who to ring when something isn’t right — and they want that person to understand their setup without starting from scratch.
Finally, many conversations come down to reviewing what’s already in place. Not full rip-and-replace projects, just sensible checks: is the router fit for purpose, is the Wi-Fi doing its job, does the contract still make sense, and is there a backup if things go wrong?
None of these trends are dramatic or headline-grabbing, but they matter. Connectivity works best when it’s quietly reliable, properly thought through, and supported by people who know the business.
If any of this sounds familiar and you’d like a straightforward review of your current setup, I’m always happy to help. No pressure, no jargon — just a practical look at what’s working, what isn’t, and what could be improved.
