Not that long ago, internet access in the workplace meant checking emails and browsing a few websites.
Today, it underpins almost everything.
As businesses evolve, so do staff expectations — and connectivity has had to move with them. The problem is, many organisations are still operating on assumptions that belonged to a different era.
Here’s what’s changed.
1. Video Is Now Standard — Not Special
Video meetings were once occasional. Now they’re daily.
Whether it’s Microsoft Teams, Webex or Zoom, staff expect:
- Clear audio
- Stable video
- No dropouts
- No awkward “you’re frozen” moments
That means low latency, consistent upload capacity and properly configured internal networks — not just a fast download speed.
2. Cloud-First Working Is the Norm
File servers in cupboards are steadily being replaced by cloud platforms.
Microsoft 365, cloud CRMs, hosted VoIP and online accounting systems all rely heavily on upload performance and stable connectivity.
Staff expect instant access to files from anywhere. When that doesn’t happen, productivity dips and frustration rises quickly.
3. Hybrid and Flexible Working
Staff increasingly expect to move between:
- Office
- Home
- Client sites
Without any noticeable difference in performance.
That requires:
- Secure VPN or cloud-based access
- Sufficient bandwidth at the office
- Business-grade resilience
If the office connection struggles when half the team are on video calls and the other half are syncing files, something isn’t aligned.
4. Wi-Fi Is No Longer “Good Enough”
In many offices, Wi-Fi was installed years ago and simply left.
But modern expectations include:
- Seamless roaming
- Strong coverage in meeting rooms
- Reliable guest access
- Separation of voice and data traffic
A poor internal network can make a perfectly good internet circuit feel inadequate.
5. Downtime Tolerance Is Lower Than Ever
Perhaps the biggest shift is this:
Staff expect systems to work. All the time.
If the internet drops, productivity stops. There’s little patience for “it’ll be back shortly.”
As teams grow more dependent on cloud services and VoIP, backup connectivity and automatic failover move from “nice to have” to essential.
The Real Question
It’s not just:
“How fast is your broadband?”
It’s:
“Does your connectivity reflect how your team now works?”
In many growing businesses, staff expectations have moved on — but the infrastructure hasn’t caught up.
At KIPCOM Limited (Kingston Technologies Group), we help businesses across Hull and the Humber region review whether their connectivity genuinely supports modern working practices — not those of five or ten years ago.
If you suspect expectations have changed but your setup hasn’t, it may be time for a sensible review.
