Not every improvement in business connectivity requires a major upgrade.
In fact, some of the most effective changes are surprisingly simple.
Over the years, I’ve seen many situations where a small adjustment has made a significant difference — often saving time, frustration and unnecessary expense.
Here’s a typical example.
The Situation
A local business had been experiencing intermittent issues with their phone system.
Calls would occasionally break up, sometimes drop altogether, and staff had started to notice delays during conversations.
The immediate assumption was that the broadband connection was at fault.
They were already considering upgrading to a faster service.
The Investigation
On visiting the site, the first thing to check was the network setup.
The broadband connection itself was stable and performing as expected.
However, the internal setup told a different story.
The router was several years old, WiFi coverage was inconsistent across the office, and all devices — including the VoIP phones — were sharing the same network without any prioritisation.
During busy periods, voice traffic was competing with general internet usage such as file downloads and cloud backups.
The Simple Fix
Rather than replacing the broadband connection, a few straightforward changes were made:
- The router was updated to a more suitable model
- Basic Quality of Service (QoS) settings were applied to prioritise voice traffic
- WiFi placement was improved to provide more consistent coverage
No change to the broadband package was required.
The Outcome
The difference was immediate.
Call quality improved, delays disappeared, and the intermittent issues were resolved.
The business avoided the cost and disruption of upgrading to a higher-speed service that would not have addressed the underlying problem.
A Common Pattern
This is not an unusual situation.
Many connectivity issues that appear to be related to broadband speed are actually caused by factors within the local network.
Common examples include:
- outdated equipment
- poor WiFi coverage
- lack of traffic prioritisation
- network congestion
Addressing these areas often delivers a more effective and cost-efficient solution.
A Practical Approach
When problems arise, it is natural to look for a quick fix.
Upgrading speed is often the first option considered because it is the most visible.
However, taking a step back and reviewing the setup as a whole can often reveal simpler solutions.
In many cases, small adjustments can make a significant difference — and save a business from unnecessary expense and disruption.
