Technology has changed dramatically over the last 25 years.
Broadband has replaced dial-up.
Cloud phone systems have replaced traditional PBXs.
Businesses now rely on cloud applications, remote working and high-speed fibre connections.
But despite all that change, some lessons have never changed.
1. Listen before recommending
The best solution isn’t always the most expensive one.
Understanding how a business actually works is far more important than simply recommending the latest technology.
2. Reliability beats speed
Fast broadband is great.
Reliable broadband is essential.
A slightly slower service that works consistently is often more valuable than a faster service that’s unreliable.
3. Simplicity wins
Technology should make life easier.
If a solution is too complicated for people to use confidently, it probably isn’t the right solution.
4. Relationships matter
People remember how you helped them when things went wrong.
Support and trust are just as important as the products themselves.
5. Technology never stands still
One of the things I enjoy most about this industry is that there’s always something new to learn.
The businesses that embrace sensible change are usually the ones that benefit most.
Final Thoughts
After more than two decades in telecoms, one thing remains constant.
People don’t buy technology.
They buy confidence.
Confidence that when they pick up the phone, connect to the internet or start an online meeting, everything will simply work.
Helping businesses achieve that confidence is still the part of my job I enjoy most.
