Few things create panic in an office faster than hearing someone say, “The internet’s down.”
Emails stop arriving. Cloud applications refuse to load. Video meetings disconnect. The phones may even stop working.
After many years helping businesses with connectivity issues, I’ve learned that the fastest way to solve a problem is to avoid making assumptions.
Start with the obvious
Before diving into technical diagnostics, I always ask a few simple questions.
- Is everyone affected, or just one person?
- Are wired devices working?
- Are only Wi-Fi devices affected?
- Are the router lights showing anything unusual?
- Has there been a local power interruption?
These questions often point towards the cause within minutes.
Broadband or Wi-Fi?
One of the biggest misconceptions is assuming the broadband has failed.
In reality, the broadband connection may be working perfectly while the Wi-Fi has developed a problem.
Understanding the difference saves time and avoids unnecessary fault reports.
Eliminate possibilities
Troubleshooting isn’t about guessing.
It’s about ruling things out one by one.
Power.
Cables.
Router.
Wi-Fi.
External network.
By working methodically, you can usually identify where the fault lies.
Don’t forget the simple things
Loose cables.
Accidentally switched-off equipment.
A router that’s frozen and simply needs restarting.
They happen more often than people realise.
Final Thoughts
Technology doesn’t always fail dramatically.
Quite often it’s something small.
The key is staying calm, checking the basics and following a logical process.
That’s usually the quickest route back online.
